Chad Evans' attorneys persuaded him not to speak to the media after the death of Kassidy Bortner, so reporters obtained the story from others. His attorneys also persuaded Chad not to testify at his own trial, thereby depriving the jury of the chance to hear Chad's 's response to the false allegations by the prosecution and to see who Chad Evans really was: a hard working, hard playing young man who loved children, including Kassidy Bortner. His attorneys also persuaded Chad not to insist upon his innocence at his sentencing in 2002, for fear of angering the judge.

However, during his trial and afterwards, in various notes and letters, Chad Evans did commit to writing his story as he struggled to prove his innocence; and those writings are presented here. The dates of the writings are either of the referenced action or of the date written.
